My favourite UCC Sumiyaki was out from the stores for a long while. Swapped to Nescafe Cap Colombia. After 1/4, wanted to throw it away.
Went to Don Don Donki for 1 more recce mission – maybe there’s a restock of Sumiyaki.
Nope out of stock. Then i saw UCC Artisan Mellow Taste and UCC Artisan BitterSweet. The former was obviously a bestseller. Only 3 jars left on the shelf. And then, there’s BitterSweet — 2 rows, practically untouched. But “bittersweet” sounds like life right now. So I got it without hesitation.
The first sip... was disappointing. Its flavor was muted. Tastes like hot water with soil from the park downstairs. The first sniff, is faint, gentle. Almost not-there. Unlike UCC Sumiyaki – which demands your full attention - aroma rams up the nose and sends tingles all over the cerebral cortex. Mmmm... Adding more grains of BitterSweet... did almost nothing...
But then!
After the mouth dries up, the magic hits.
While Sumiyaki leaves strong coffee breath that makes you want to rinse your mouth just to be polite to other folks sharing the same space. Sumiyaki tells you that you paid for value.
But BitterSweet....

I started to notice the lingering sweetness all over the tongue while my mouth was filled with mild bitterness... The lingering scent, non-intrusive. Sweet. Gentle. It made me eager for the next sip. Made me not want to forget.
THIS is the BitterSweet...
The space around my cup carried a mild bitter nostalgia. Not in my nose — in my memory of where the cup was. I realized I wanted the next sip not because the last one was strong, but because it left a perfectly-shaped absence.
Not like the hot girl walking past assaulting you with her out of the world perfect beauty and sledgehammer perfume.
But like a lover waking up beside you in soft clingy white shirt. Lingering scent.. smiling cheekily through her sleep tousled hair.. And just as you notice, she gets up and leaves... Leaving you with emptiness.... Until the next cup.
